Computer Education

New Life Skills For A New Generation Of Afghans

Computer class for girls at one of HTAC's schools

Computer skills are rapidly becoming an important, yet missing element of education for many Afghan children.  As a developing country that is struggling to overcome an almost totally destroyed infrastructure, Afghanistan desperately needs to bring information technology into all sectors (government, public, and private) and educate young people in computer literacy, especially girls. As the first organization to introduce computers and computer education into Afghan public schools, HTAC has taken a leading role in addressing the computer literacy challenge.  Since 2003, HTAC has provided computer education to over 27,000 girls and boys, introducing them to the world of information technology, giving them practical job skills, and changing their lives for the better.

Each school we support is equipped with a fully-functioning computer laboratory, custom designed and user-friendly computer workbooks, and well-qualified instructors.  Our unique program teaches basic skills and real world computer applications in: Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and for 12th grade students, Power Point.  Since 2003, approximately 95% of all enrolled students have achieved working competencies in each of these skill areas.

HTAC’s ability to provide computer education to large numbers of girls (over 15,000 and counting), is impacting their lives in several profound ways.  Not only are we providing girls with the necessary skills to secure computer related jobs upon their graduation from school, we are empowering them to move from poverty and live productive lives, which in turn helps reduce the number of early forced marriages and child-bearing that many of them would be vulnerable to.

In a country where home-grown human resources are desperately needed, HTAC is doing its part in preparing young Afghans to become proud, productive citizens and help lead the way in bringing Afghanistan into the 21st century.
